Dec 2, 2023 | 10:19 PM

On what was the team’s annual Toque and Teddy Bear Toss Night, the Red Deer Rebels (11-10-0-3) hosted the Everett Silvertips (17-11-1-0) Saturday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

It was also the finale of a six-game homestand, with the Rebels closing it out in thrilling fashion — winning 3-2 in a four-round shootout.

The Rebels were 4-1-0-0 on the homestand coming in, and hadn’t hosted Everett in years, last playing them to a 4-2 loss in Everett on Feb. 5, 2023.

They now head out on the road for five straight (more details below) sporting an away record of 5-4-0-3, and of course an impressive 5-1 record on the on the now complete homestand.

Scoring summary

The Rebels and Silvertips nearly got out of the first scoreless, but Kai Uchacz (15th) had other ideas, scoring the game’s first goal with just 11 seconds left in the first period, and triggering an onslaught of stuffed animals.

It was 1-0 after 20 minutes.

A mere 88 seconds into the middle frame, Tarin Smith (4th) equalized.

Talon Brigley (8th) regained the lead not long after, putting one home at the 3:51 mark.

But Everett stuck with it, Beau Courtney (6th) this time bringing the Silvertips to square with the home side, this time at 7:33.

In the third, and through overtime, there were zero goals to speak of. Red Deer outshot Everett 6-0 in the extra period, but onto the shootout they headed.

The shootout unfolded like so:

Kalan Lind missed for Red Deer, which was followed by unsuccessful attempts from Austin Roest, Kai Uchacz, Dominik Rymon, Frantisek Formanek and Ben Hemmerling.

In the shootout’s fourth round, Jhett Larson finally beat the goaltender Tyler Palmer, and then Chase Wutzke stopped Tarin Smith to secure the two points for Red Deer.
