Final telephone town hall regarding Alberta Pension Plan takes place for central Albertans Wednesday evening

Nov 22, 2023 | 3:10 PM

The fifth and final telephone town hall hosted by the Alberta government regarding a proposed Alberta Pension Plan is taking place this evening.

The Alberta Pension Plan Engagement Panel, led by former provincial treasurer Jim Dinning, is inviting Albertans to discuss a report by the independent pension consultant LifeWorks, which describes how a provincial pension plan could work.

“Now that the LifeWorks report is out for discussion, our panel has been tasked with listening to Albertans and hearing their thoughts, views, and concerns about a provincial pension plan. For something this big, Albertans deserve the benefit of a rational, adult conversation,” said Jim Dinning, chair, APP Engagement Panel, back in October when the telephone town halls were announced.

Government officials say public engagement started with an online survey when the LifeWorks report was released on Sept. 21 and the engagement panel launched a series of telephone town hall sessions starting Oct. 16.

Albertans had the chance to listen live to every session online by clicking on the link provided on the website, regardless of where they live. For details on how to participate, Albertans should visit AlbertaPensionPlan.ca.

According to provincial officials, the report suggests an Alberta Pension Plan could secure Albertans’ pension benefits and achieve substantial savings with lower contribution rates and higher benefits for families and retirees.

The engagement panel is said to be gathering Albertans’ feedback on the implications, opportunities and challenges of establishing a provincial pension plan. Officials say the panel will then submit a report based on the provincewide engagement. The government says an Alberta Pension Plan would have to be approved by referendum before it could be implemented.

The final telephone town hall date and time is as follows:

  • Central Alberta – Wednesday, Nov. 22, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Meantime, the NDP formally announced this week, five additional in-person pension town halls in Calgary, Red Deer, St. Albert, Ardrossan and a second date in Edmonton.

The party says further town halls are being planned in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Drumheller and elsewhere in the weeks ahead.

The Opposition says Albertans are continued to be encouraged to make their voice heard — https://www.albertasfuture.ca/event-registration/pension-survey.
