“It’s all surrounding cooking safety and specifically addressing unattended cooking which is a leading cause [of fires] here in the city of Red Deer” said Andrew Towers, RDES Fire Safety Codes Officer, adding that improper disposal of smoking materials is a close second in causes. “Every year, we respond to multiple fires directly related to unattended cooking.”

He remembered a recent story where a man was reheating fries in an oiled pan before realizing he had to pick up his kids from school. Forgetting to turn off the stove, neighbours luckily saw smoke coming from the house and called firefighters, preventing a fire that could have destroyed the whole house.

He says some preventative measures include setting a timer on your phone while cooking in case you fall asleep or have been drinking, have working fire alarms checked preferably once a month or at least twice a year, and in case of a fire, close the door behind you to contain the fire in one area and leave the house to call emergency services.

Homes can also be stocked with fire extinguishers in case of a small fire.

Hosted by the Fire Prevention Bureau, the City of Red Deer is offering free fire extinguisher drop-in training sessions throughout the week, open to all ages without appointments required.

Participants can learn how to be prepared to respond to an emergency with the proper use of fire extinguishers at one of the following locations:

• Tuesday, October 10 at the G.H. Dawe Centre (6175 67 St. – NW parking lot) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Wednesday, October 11 at the Servus Arena (4725 43 St.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Thursday, October 12 at the Collicutt Centre (3031 30 Ave.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Towers said that RDES will also have a booth at this weekend’s Red Deer Home Show at Westerner Park with lots of fire prevention safety items, home safety books, emergency roadside kits, burger flippers with safety slogans, and other fire safety materials, while answering the public’s questions.

In Red Deer County, the Protective Services department will be hosting Open Houses this week at various stations from 6 – 8 p.m.:

• October 10:
  • Delburne – Station 8 (1925 22 Ave.)
  • Red Deer County – Station 1 (Highway 595 & Tange Road 272)
  • Elnora – Station 11 (103 Main St.)
  • Springbrook – Station 4 (6400 Airport Dr.)
• October 11:
  • Bowden – Station 7 (2114 20 Ave.)
  • Spruce View – Station 5 (Hwy 54)

Guests can ask questions, meet some team members, get up-close with the equipment, and find out what it takes to become a paid-on-call Firefighter and Emergency Responder.

County officials say that Fire Inspector Scott Tuton coordinated school presentations on Tuesday in Delburne and Bowden. He also transported kids from Spruce View himself by bus to attend the education talks about fire safety, aimed at students in Grades 9-12. They confirm Protective Services will also have a crew doing recruitment and fire safety work at the Costco in Gasoline Alley Wednesday from 1 – 4 p.m.
