Sep 7, 2023 | 5:20 PM

The start of the 2023 Fall Semester across post-secondary schools in Alberta has brought the sports scene back to Red Deer after the summer holidays.

This week the Kings and Queens Cross Country team will be participating in their first Running Room Grand Prix of the season on Saturday in Edmonton with Concordia University hosting the event. The women will be off at the sound of the gun at 12 pm with the men to follow.

Soccer is back as well with the Kings and Queens starting their campaign on the road as they head down to Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to open up their season. Both teams will be in Lethbridge on Saturday afternoon with the Queens kicking things off at 2 pm and the men to follow. The following day the women will start at 12 pm and the Kings will follow at 2 pm in Medicine Hat.

Queens vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks

• • Saturday, September 9 | 2 pm at Lethbridge

Queens vs Medicine Hat Rattlers

• • Sunday, September 10 | 12 pm at Medicine Hat

It will be a rematch of last year’s Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship semi-final as the Queens visit the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. The Queens defeated the Kodiaks and went on to win their first-ever championship in program history which means their championship defense will start this weekend. On Sunday, the women’s team will head out east to finish their road trip in Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers.

Last year, the Queens defeated the Kodiaks twice, 5-1 and 3-2. With no losses last year, the Queens also swept the season series against the Rattlers in dominant fashion with scores of 14-1 and 7-0.

The Queens home opener will take place on September 16 when they battle with the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. They will have a total of 12 regular season matches.

The ACAC Championship will take place from October 26-28 at the Edmonton Soccer Dome which will be co-hosted by Concordia University, NAIT and The Kings University.

Kings vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks

• • Saturday, September 9 | 4 pm at Lethbridge

Kings vs Medicine Hat Rattlers

• • Sunday, September 10 | 2 pm at Medicine Hat

The Kings will join their female counterparts on the road trip down south to take on the Kodiaks and Rattlers as well.

Last year, the men finished off with two ties against the Kodiaks, both finishing in a 2-2 draw. As for the season series last season against the Rattlers that was a different story as the Kings outscored Medicine Hat 8-3 in their two games against each other. These victories were two out of the four wins the Kings finished the season with but managed to only lose one and tie five matches. This record put them in second place at the end of the regular season but could not get past the quarterfinals of the championships.

The local fans will have a wait a few weeks to watch the Kings play on their home field as their first game in Red Deer is not until September 23 when they take on the Ambrose University Lions.

The Kings will have a total of 10 regular season matches with the ACAC Championship taking place from October 26-28 if they qualify.

Head Coach Douglas Spicer is hoping the veterans of the team will help the first-year student-athletes navigate the nerves and the strategy that comes along with running long distances. Spicer’s goal for the team is to feel comfortable within the Grand Prix atmosphere and to learn how to run a 6km race, which will be their first time for most of them. As for the veterans, the head coach wants them to test their fitness and speed development and hopefully establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the races this year.

The team will compete in three more races before the ACAC Championships on October 28 hosted by Lethbridge College.
