Mental health and addiction services to be consolidated under provincial program

Aug 3, 2023 | 4:01 PM

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it’s working to consolidate all mental health and addiction services across the province.

This after Premier Danielle Smith issued Minister Dan Williams his mandate letter on Thursday.

AHS says this action will improve provincial alignment and achieve better outcomes for Albertans.

“We have an important responsibility to ensure that no matter what part of the province is called home, individuals can access the best mental health care and addiction treatment we have to offer,” says Williams. “I am proud to be working closely with AHS to deliver these services for Albertans young and old.”

Currently, AHS provides these services in all five zones, but they are operated independently by each.

They will eventually be offered under one consolidated provincial program.

“We have excellent, life-saving programs and services that are available to Albertans when and where they need it, and that will not change,” said Mauro Chies, President and CEO, AHS. “This step will improve coordination and oversight of those services, resulting in a more consistent, effective system of care.”

Dr. John Cowell, Official Administrator, AHS, calls the news, “a positive step.”

The announcement comes nearly three weeks after Health Minister Adriana LaGrange received her mandate letter in which she is asked to enhance local decision-making authority through reforms to the overall health care system.

Alberta Health Services receives nearly $1 billion provincial funding every year to deliver mental health and addiction services, the province says.
