Red Deer Public Library to pilot branch at Collicutt

Jul 21, 2023 | 9:25 AM

Red Deer Public Library is excitedly piloting a fourth branch at the Collicutt Centre (3031 30 Avenue).

The branch will open to the public at the end of August, with the pilot’s duration being one year.

Library officials will then evaluate the success, and feasibility of a more permanent arrangement.

“We love it when our patrons give us feedback that encourages us to explore new things, and what we heard from our Bower Place experiment was that a Collicutt Branch could be very popular,” says Shelley Ross, RDPL CEO.

Ross says the location, at about 600 square feet, is meant to provide the community a convenient point of access. The space, however, will only accomodate a small collection, but will also have hold pickups, with transfers coming from other branches located downtown, at the Dawe Centre, and in Timberlands.

It will also be unique in that it’ll be mostly self-serve.

“All public libraries are based on trust,” Ross says. “Every day we trust that our patrons will bring back the things that they borrow, and bring them back in such good shape and so quickly that many people can share the same materials. It’s about a community of people who love books and stories and information, and this is just the next chapter in their RDPL community. We trust that our patrons will help us keep the space welcoming in every way, helping each other when they get the chance.”

The self-serve Collicutt branch will be accessible to the public during all open hours at the Collicutt Centre, which are currently 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on holidays.

An official opening date is to be announced.
