Red Deer’s annual Bard on Bower Festival returns with two Shakespearean shows

Jul 4, 2023 | 1:45 PM

The Prime Stock Theatre Company has announced the return of their annual Bard on Bower Festival in Red Deer this July.

The Festival will once again be held at the Bower Ponds main stage (4715 Fountain Dr.) from July 14-30 with two Shakespearean shows: ‘Henry 4’, and ‘As You Like It’.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with additional matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Admission is free and guests are being encouraged to bring their lawn chair and friends to immerse themselves in the world of Shakespeare this summer.

Henry 4

According to Artistic Director Richard Beaune, ‘Henry 4’ is a continuation of the story they began last season with Richard II. Henry Bolingbroke has succeeded to the throne of England as King Henry IV but is not without controversy as to how he got there. Sound familiar?

With a tight-knit ensemble of 12 actors, the company says ‘Henry 4’ will bring to the stage a historical story of power and honor, wit and grit, with a good helping of comedy as well.

The play is directed by Edmonton’s Michael Clark, who directed his first Shakespeare play in 1992. Since then, he has directed many productions of various genres for numerous theatre companies such as Onion Theatre in Edmonton, Nakai Theatre in Whitehorse, and Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre, to name only a few.

As You Like It

The company says ‘As You Like It’ comes from the lighter side of Shakespeare’s canon. Set primarily in the Forest of Arden which is teeming with merry men, wistful lovers, a banished Duke and of course a fool; the audience will have to keep a close eye on who is wooing who, in this playful and charming comedy of love and disguise.

The play is directed by Beaune who has performed in every province and territory across Canada. He says he always gravitates to his first love; Shakespeare. He has directed or acted in nearly 40 Shakespeare productions during the span of his over 35-year career including assistant directing and then acting in a production of ‘As You Like It’ at the Stratford Festival.
