Local fire cadet awarded $1,000 scholarship through Penhold’s Futures on Fire program

The Town of Penhold Protective Services wrapped up their Futures on Fire Program for the year and awarded a $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding fire cadet.

The town fire department held a family barbeque and named Nathen Young as the recipient of the ATCO sponsored scholarship.

“He’s been an outstanding cadet all year proving himself and elevating his skills at each and every training session,” said Lieutenant Brittany Evans, Cadet coordinator.

The Futures on Fire program provides an opportunity for high school students to train alongside professional firefighters. Officials say they become integrated into the fire department training regime to learn the skills that it takes to be a professional firefighter, earn work experience hours with the school, and create new friendships and lasting memories.

“We know many cadets will return next year for their final year of high school, and we look forward to seeing them again along with new faces in September,” said Lieutenant Bailey McKay.

Officials say there is an opportunity each year for the students to challenge one another in a provincial cadet competition against other Futures on Fire Programs.

The fire department says one of the biggest benefits of the program for the volunteer fire department is recruitment. Once the cadets turn 18, they are given the opportunity to join the department as professional firefighters with certification and training.

“This program has been a huge part of our recruitment and community engagement strategy over the last eight years and we are very proud to partner with ATCO on the Futures on Fire Program,” said Chief Sean Pendergast.

Officials say 25 per cent of volunteer firefighters in Penhold were part of the Futures on Fire program.
