With the end of the school year comes reflection on the completed work by Red Deer Public Schools’ Aspiring Leaders program.

The program aims to build strong strong, caring and visionary leaders, with 75 staff members taking part in a June 7 symposium. The symposium included a talk from keynote speaker Ila Edgar of Big Change Inc., plus several breakout sessions.

“This event marked the culmination of our program for the 2022/2023 school year, and most importantly was a celebration of the learning and leading we have done this year and will continue to do in the future,” said Associate Superintendent, Human Resources, Corrine Thorsteinson. “Both the presenters and participants energized one another’s learning and connected us all to one another.”

In Edgar’s presentation entitled ‘Trust-Focused Leadership’, she gave participants tools to develop trusting and collaborative relationships, increase ability to deal with tough issues, reflect on how self-leadership is a foundation for leading others, and how to solve problems and make great decisions, the division notes.

“We were grateful that Ila joined us for our Aspiring Leaders Symposium this year. We learned some practical tools on building and maintaining trust in leadership through her interactive keynote presentation,” said Thorsteinson.

“All of our sessions have been a perfect opportunity for any Red Deer Public employee who wants to explore whether a formal leadership position is right for them; wants to build or enhance their leadership toolkit; wants to lead where they are at; or wants an opportunity to learn from and engage with other colleagues interested in leadership.”

Symposium breakout sessions included ‘Leading with vision’, Leading with intention’, Dealing with difficult conversations’, and ‘Leading by collaborating’, among others.

“When we imagined this year’s program, it was exactly what has transpired – dedicated, committed professionals from all corners of the Division with a passion for learning and leadership,” Thorsteinson said. “We look forward to continuing Aspiring Leaders for our staff next year.”
