Red Deerians invited to influence changes to the Land Use Bylaw

Red Deerians are invited over the month of June to share their ideas and perspectives on the city’s Land Use Bylaw through a public participation process.

The Bylaw establishes rules and regulations for land development as well as the process of making decisions for development permit applications within the city.

City officials say the primary intent of the project is to review the fundamentals and regulations of the Land Use Bylaw, endeavoring to increase flexibility and adaptability by reducing regulations where they are not necessary.

Areas of the bylaw that the City is looking for the public to help influence include:

• Ideas to increase housing options for all stages and ages in residential zones. This could include allowing for more suites, and including duplexes under R1.
• Ways to create consistency and equity between neighbourhoods for housing design standards.
• Create a common definition for Developed Areas and criteria that could replace the current Mature Neighbourhood Overlay.
• Options to create cost savings by reducing certain regulations.
• Expand compatible uses in residential, commercial and industrial zones.

“We want to know what makes our city and neighbourhoods liveable for all stages and ages, and what ideas Red Deerians have to leverage land use planning to position our city even better for tomorrow,” said Emily Damberger, Manager for City Planning and Growth. “Through this public participation, we are inviting Red Deerians to influence how we, as a city, grow for tomorrow.”

How to participate:

1. Provide input online:

   The online engagement tool will be live until June 24 and includes interactive components as well as a survey.

2. Join the City for an in-person workshop at the Westerner Park Chalet (4847A 19 St):
   • Wednesday, June 7: Developer, real estate, and commercial focus
     • Session 1: 3 – 4:30 p.m.
     • Session 2: 5:30 – 7 p.m.
   • Thursday, June 8: Resident and community groups focus
     • Session 1: 3 – 4:30 p.m.
     • Session 2: 5:30 – 7 p.m.

The City says child-care will be available upon request and each session is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

To register, participants can email communications@reddeer.ca and specify the session date and time they wish to attend, and if they require child-care.

Every municipality in Alberta is required to have a Land Use Bylaw according to the Municipal Government Act.
