Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) is being congratulated for raising over $50,000 last year with their Terry Fox Run.

WCPS says the Terry Fox Foundation has expressed its gratitude for their schools’ continued efforts and commitment to “live the legacy of Terry Fox” by raising funds for cancer research through the Run.

They state 18 schools from the district participated and raised a total of $54,340.17, with Ponoka Elementary School standing out for their fundraising efforts totaling $11,619.50.

Officials say it’s something the entire division is also proud of.

“We are incredibly proud of the commitment and passion displayed by our students and staff in raising funds for the Terry Fox School Run,” said Tim De Ruyck, WCPS Superintendent. “Their efforts truly demonstrate the power of our community coming together to make a difference. We are grateful for the participation of families and community members who joined us in this important cause. It is a testament to our shared values of empathy, perseverance, and the importance of giving back.”

In a letter to the school division, the Foundation said that Terry Fox, an iconic Canadian hero, asked for only $1 from every Canadian in 1980 to help find a cure for cancer. However, he went far beyond that, demonstrating perseverance, empathy, courage, and never giving up – values that remain relevant today. They continued to say the lessons he taught are especially important in schools, and it is an honor that educators use Fox as a means of teaching.
