143 km/h In The City

Red Deer RCMP stop male travelling at extreme speed

Apr 26, 2023 | 1:52 PM

Red Deer RCMP nabbed a driver over the weekend they say was travelling at more than double the posted speed limit on a city street.

On Apr. 23, 2023, at approximately 01:12 a.m., Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services were conducting traffic enforcement patrols on 67 Street, near the neighbourhood of Clearview Ridge, when police observed a 2014 Dodge Ram travelling at an extreme speed. Utilizing a speed measuring instrument, Mounties say the officer on scene determined the vehicle was travelling 143 km/h in the posted 70 km/h zone.

Police say the driver of the Dodge Ram was stopped and subjected to Mandatory Alcohol Screening. Due to the results of two roadside breath samples, the 19-year-old male was issued a 72-hour licence suspension, and the Dodge Ram was seized for three days.

Since the male was travelling 73 km/h above the posted speed limit, RCMP say he has received a court summons. Drivers speeding at more than 50 km/h are subject to a mandatory court appearance where a judge can impose penalties such as a fine or licence suspension.
