UPDATE: Sipekne’katik RCMP continue with firearms investigation

Update: This RCMP update on March 27, 2023 is relating to a previous story published by the Canadian Press on March 26, 2023. 

INDIAN BROOK, N.S. — Sipekne’katik RCMP is continuing with the firearms investigation that lead to an emergency alert yesterday evening.

On March 26, 2023, at approximately 4:45 p.m., while on patrol on Church St. in Sipekne’katik, an RCMP officer was approached by a woman who advised that a 27-year-old woman, Shannon Yvonne Hudson, was armed inside of a home on Dowie Rd. The witness also advised that the woman had discharged the firearm inside the home approximately 45 minutes earlier, around 4 p.m. RCMP officers began securing the area around the home and Dowie Rd. was closed to the public. The Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team was also dispatched to the scene.

As the investigation progressed, RCMP officers learned that Hudson was not inside the residence and as a result, shortly after 7 p.m., an emergency alert was issued advising people in the area to be on the lookout for the woman and if the woman was seen, to call 911 and not approach her.

RCMP officers continued to investigate and after searching the residence, it was determined that there was no evidence to support that the firearm had been discharged, nor that the 27-year-old woman was in possession of a firearm. As there was no longer a threat to public safety, the emergency alert was cancelled.

Shortly after 12 a.m. on March 27, the 27-year-old woman turned herself in to the Sipekne’katik RCMP. The woman was interviewed and later released without charge, as at this time, there is insufficient evidence to form the belief on reasonable grounds that an offence was committed.
