Red Deer Sports and Outdoor Show at Westerner Park

Mar 2, 2023 | 6:00 PM

The 55th Annual Red Deer Sports and Outdoor Show is set to take place March 3-5, 2023, Westerner Park’s Exhibition Hall this weekend.

Described as a key fundraiser for the Red Deer Fish and Game Association, the event will have anything and everything you can imagine when it comes to outdoor sports and activities.

“These funds are used to operate an indoor and outdoor firearms range,” explains event spokesperson Dave Drok. “We have habitat land with fish ponds, camping area and an archery range. We also have a youth program and we also use this funding towards scholarships for high school and college students and then we also send a bunch of kids to camp every summer.”

Drok says this year’s trade show will feature of 70 exhibitors.

“We’ve got boats, we’ve got RVs, there’s a lot of fishing and hunting related stuff and pretty much any sort of outdoor pursuits or anything that supports your outdoor activities,” adds Drok. “We’ve got water sports-related stuff here, kayaks, we’ve also got a bunch of draw prizes and what’s really exciting is your parking is included in your admission fees.”

Drok anticipates more than 5,000 people to attend the show over its three days.

“If we get up in the neighbourhood of about 6,500, that’s a massive success for the Fish and Game Association and that’s a good fundraiser for us,” says Drok. “If we were to see 6.500 people, we might be able to raise upwards of $50,000 for the club.”

Drok notes there’s a ton of things to see and do at the show such as hunter education training, face painting for the kids, several interesting guest speakers, the Canadian Reptile Show and much more.

“We really appreciate everybody who comes out. It’s a key fundraiser for us and of course, we haven’t had it since 2020, so everybody’ support and their volunteer time and their efforts are greatly appreciated,” says Drok.
