The French-Canadian Association of Alberta (Association canadienne-française de l’Alberta; ACFA) will be hosting their Winter Carnival this weekend in Red Deer.

UPDATE: Due to the cold weather, the ACFA says the Winter Carnival has been cancelled for Friday night but will continue on Saturday as planned.

On Friday, February 24 from 6 – 10 p.m. and on February 25 from 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., locals can celebrate French-Canadian traditions through music, dance, arts and crafts, sports, and food at Bower Ponds (4715 Fountain Dr).

Each year, the Regional ACFA of Red Deer hosts the carnival and invites other cultures to participate by sharing their own traditions at the event.

Activities and attractions throughout the carnival include ice skating, snowshoeing, winter biking, sledding, painting on snow, ice sculptors, snowmen, igloos, a giant foosball area and various games.

On Friday, the evening will begin with a choir performed by the students of École La Prairie followed by live music from francophone artists Cristian De La Luna and DJ Marc Olivier.

On Saturday, a variety of francophone artists will be performing, including Les Bûcherons, Groove with Ivan, Circo Balanzo and FLO Franco.

There will also be maple taffy (tire d’érable) on February 25, which is maple syrup slightly hardened on ice and eaten on a stick, and fireworks to end the night at 6 p.m.
