Feb 20, 2023 | 5:06 PM

Following a 5-4 overtime win in Medicine Hat Saturday night, the rematch in Red Deer on Family Day Monday saw the Tigers claw their way to victory at the Peavey Mart Centrium, defeating the Rebels 4-1.

The Tigers would get on the board early when Brendan Lee scored just 45 seconds into the first period, beating Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey for his 23rd goal of the season. Tomas Mrsic and Dru Krebs picked up the assists on the play to make it 1-0 Medicine Hat.

The Tigers would score once more before the period came to an end when Andrew Basha scored his 12th of the season at 16:24, on the power play, following a roughing penalty to Red Deer’s Carson Birnie. Oasiz Wiesblatt and Reid Andresen were credited with the assists to make it 2-0 Tigers.

Medicine Hat outshot Red Deer 13-5 in the first period.

The Tigers would strike first in the second period as well when Cayden Lindstrom scored his 16th of the season, on the power play, at 13:21, following a boarding penalty to Red Deer’s Ben King to make it 3-0 Medicine Hat. Reid Andresen assisted on the play.

Medicine Hat outshot Red Deer 9-5 in the second period for a two period total of 22-10 after 40 minutes.

The Rebels broke the goose egg in the third period though when Kai Uchacz scored his 44th goal of the season at the 4:50 mark, somehow squeaking the puck past Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow to make it 3-1. Frantisek Formanek assisted on the play.

Then with time winding down in the final period, the Rebels pulled goaltender Kyle Kelsey from between the pipes to add the extra attacker but the Tigers took advantage with Brendan Lee shooting it into the empty net, unassisted at 19:02, to make it a 4-1 final.

Red Deer outshot Medicine Hat 7-5 in the third period for a three period total of 27-17 in favour of the Tigers.

Special teams were a factor in Monday’s game as well, with Medicine Hat going 2/6 on the power play while Red Deer went 0/2.

“You give up a goal first shift, it’s not always a good recipe,” said Rebels head coach Steve Konowalchuk. “And with the penalties, we just couldn’t dig ourselves out of a hole. Those penalties, we deserved them. But again, when you’re sharp, when you’re focused, you don’t take those penalties as much.”

“Our energy since our trip has not been the same,” he continued. “I found every game on the trip we had a lot of energy, a lot of passion, more enthusiasm. But coming back it’s been inconsistent in practice and it’s been inconsistent these last few games, so we’ve got to get that back and we will.”

Medicine Hat swept the three star selections on Monday, with Red Deer native Tyler MacKenzie picking up the game’s third star. Brendan Lee was named second star for his two goal performance on the night, while Cayden Lindstrom, who scored the insurance goal for the Tigers, was named the game’s first star.

The Rebels next action is Friday, February 24, when they host the Winnipeg ICE. Face-off is 7:00 p.m. MST at the Peavey Mart Centrium. You can also catch all the action live on 106.7 Rewind Radio.
