This event has unfortunately been postponed due to unexpected transportation issues. The organizers asked us to pass along their apologies for any inconvenience.

A special event to honour the 158 Canadian service men and women who lost their lives during the war in Afghanistan is happening Feb. 18 in Red Deer.

Hosted by Sylvan Lake-based Veterans Voices of Canada (VVC), a travelling replica of the ‘Portraits of Honour’ will be at Parkland Mall, Unit #404, from 1-5 p.m. this Saturday.

Portraits of Honour is a 40 foot by 10 foot canvas which features the likenesses of all 158 soldiers, sailors and aircrew who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

It comes to Red Deer as part of a multi-city tour.

VVC Founder Al Cameron says seeing the painting, which was created by artist Dave Sopha, will be a needed reminder for anyone.

“This will open people’s eyes to the fact that we do lose soldiers in deployments globally. These are people, not just names; they were brothers and sisters,” he says.

“They were people who put their lives on the line, and we can’t just forget about them because the war is over. We must remember them.”

Cameron and VVC is most well-known for its annual Flags of Remembrance event in Sylvan Lake.

Now, the organization is opening a History, Interest and Learning Centre at Unit #404 inside Parkland Mall.

The centre will house artefacts from the Afghanistan war and other war-related items, and be a learning resource for anyone who visits, says Cameron.

A number of items will also be on display this Saturday in conjunction with the Portraits of Honour event.
