Black History Month celebration events in Red Deer raise funds for Somali school

Jan 23, 2023 | 5:16 PM

For Black History Month this February, Red Deerians can celebrate with a fundraising event for The Education for Somali Girls and Boys Foundation (ESGBF).

EVENT CELEBRATION

In partnership with the African Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta (ACCoCA) and the Central Alberta Cameroonian Community (CACC), the foundation will be hosting an event on February 24 from 8 – 11 p.m. at Festival Hall (4214 58 St).

The event will consist of a mixed-genre music party with African Caribbean DJ George Mbakneu, ethnic cuisine and drinks.

For $20, tickets include admission, Somali beef samosas, African donuts and brownies. Alcoholic drinks like beer or wine cost $5 each, while water and pop cost $2 each.

Officials say all proceeds from ticket sales will support the Foundation. ESGBF built a school in Somalia in 2015 and say they raise funds each year to pay for teachers’ salaries and sponsorships for orphan children to cover their tuitions and living expenses. The Foundation says the children do not pay fees as they cannot afford to attend other schools.

Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite, at Abyssinia Village Market (120-5017 49 St), Chubby Jerk Chicken BBQ & Kitchen (5005 50 Ave), the Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association (4910 45 St), or at the ACCoCA office (5913 50 Ave).

Officials note the alcohol proceeds will go to the ACCoCA and the CACC.

Before the event, the Foundation will be hosting a Black History Month Market for businesses and organizations to sell products and promote services.

From 4 – 7 p.m. at Festival Hall, businesses can rent a table for $15 and organizations can rent for $10.

Those interested can register with Zainab Mohamoud, founder and director of ESGBF and the ACCoCA, at 403-550-4067.
