When the goal-scorer was then given a penalty for roughing shortly after, the Rebels’ Jace Isley picked up the puck from the boards to wrist shot a shorthanded goal in a one-on-one against the Oil Kings with just 43 seconds left to the period. His 18^th goal of the season, and the team’s 11^th shorthanded goal, was assisted by Jayden Grubbe, for a 3-1 lead.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels outshot the Oil Kings 12-4.

In the middle frame, the Rebels came in hot when the WHL season goal scorer Kai Uchacz scored his 30^th goal of the season at 2:08 with the puck rebounding off his stick planted firmly on the ice in the crease. Now in a 4-1 lead, the goal was assisted by Christoffer Sedoff.

At this point, the Oil Kings swapped goaltender Kolby Hay for Logan Cunningham.

The Oil Kings also cut the deficit to 4-2 when Rilen Kovacevic scored his eighth goal of the season at 5:56, with the help of Noah Boyko and Ethan MacKenzie.

But once again, the Rebels dominated at 16:07 when Hunter Mayo scored his 13^th goal of the season, and seventh on the Oil Kings, with a slap shot from the point. Assisted by Frantisek Formanek, the Rebels pushed their lead 5-2.

And with Edmonton’s Vojtech Port in the box for boarding, the Rebels seized their power play opportunity quickly after at 17:44. With the help of Kai Uchacz and Jayden Grubbe, Kalan Lind scored his ninth goal of the season from the right face-off, leaving the Rebels in a 6-2 lead on the scoreboard.

The Rebels slightly maintained puck dominance in the second period with 10-9 for shots on goal against the Oil Kings.

The final period left only one unseized power play opportunity for the Oil Kings, with no goals on either side.

While Red Deer fractionally outshot Edmonton 9-6 in the third period, they greatly outshot overall 31-19.

The Rebels also went 1/2 on the power play while the Oil Kings went 1/7 with the man advantage.

Edmonton’s Rilen Kovacevic was awarded the third star of tonight’s game with his goal and assist. However, the Rebels were given the remaining stars with Matteo Fabrizi receiving the second star for his one assist and one goal. Kai Uchacz earned the first star for his one goal and power play assist.

The win keeps the Rebels in the Central Division’s first place spot with a record of 25-6-1-3 while the loss brings the Oil Kings to last place with 4-31-1-0.

The Rebels will meet the Calgary Hitmen on New Year’s Day at the Scotiabank Saddledome for their first game of 2023. Face-off is at 1 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
