Meteorologists with Environment and Climate Change Canada say extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 50 will moderate in most regions later today. Officials say temperatures are still expected to be very cold again tonight in some areas in Northern Alberta.

Temperatures, however, are expected to be milder for the entire province by the end of this weekend. Residents are reminded that extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are said to be greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

You’re encouraged to watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Also, if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Officials say extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
