ASIRT looking into officer-involved shooting in Maskwacis

Dec 3, 2022 | 11:06 AM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating a police-involved shooting in Maskwacis.

It was Dec. 1 at about 1:23 p.m. when Maskwacis RCMP received a report from a concerned resident that a male had a firearm and had been firing it in a rural area.

RCMP say that when officers arrived, a confrontation occurred in which an officer fired their service pistol, injuring the suspect.

Officers gave first aid and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene.

The injured male, a 27-year-old Maskwacis resident, was taken by STARS to hospital where he was last reported as in critical life-threatening condition.

No officers were injured, and ASIRT has taken over the investigation.

“The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable. This is why, as soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately notified the Director of Law Enforcement and initiated our internal review process,” a release from RCMP says.

ASIRT has not issued an official statement as of yet.
