Nov 18, 2022 | 11:15 PM

On their last of nine straight road games, the Red Deer Rebels lost 3-2 against the Hurricanes in a shootout at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge Friday.

In the first period, the Hurricanes Chase Pauls was sent to the box early for interference. Then, just 11 seconds into the power play at 2:40, Red Deer’s Jayden Grubbe passed the puck to Jace Isley near the crease. With the defence gaining on him, Isley sent the puck off to the other side of the net where Mats Lindgren pushed back on the offence and picked up the loose puck, scoring on Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin. His second goal of the season put the Rebels on the board 1-0.

The Hurricanes evened the playing field when the Rebels’ Christoffer Sedoff was given a minor penalty for delay of game. Lethbridge’s Tyson Zimmer scored his third goal of the season on the power play at 16:16 on Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey. Assisted by Nolan Bentham and Tristan Zandee, the score was now 1-1.

After 20 minutes of play, the Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 16-4.

In the middle frame, Lethbridge earned another goal just past the halfway point when Logan Wormald scored his seventh goal of the season. With the help of Tyson Zimmer and Hayden Smith, the home team now led the game 2-1.

In the second period, it was the Rebels that had more shots on goal compared to the Hurricanes, 17-12, for a two period total of 28-21 in favour of Lethbridge.

In the final period, the Rebels tied the game right out of the gate once again. At just 1:07, Jayden Grubbe scored his sixth goal of the season in a wraparound through the legs of Harrison Meneghin. With Hunter Mayor and Frantisek Formanek claiming the assists, the game was now 2-2.

Although the Rebels outshot the Hurricanes in the third period 14-6, for a three period total of 35-34 in favour of Red Deer, the evenly matched game was carried into overtime.

The Rebels had one power play opportunity in overtime; however, no success was seen by either side in the five minute period, sending the game to a shootout.

The Rebels were still able to gain more shots on goal against the Hurricanes in overtime (2-1), and overall 37-35.

The visiting team went 1/4 on the power play while the home team went 1/6.

In the shootout, while Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz missed the Rebels first attempt, the Hurricanes Noah Chadwick was able to score on the first attempt for Lethbridge. Neither team, however, scored in the remaining two rounds, leaving the Hurricanes to win the game 3-2 in a shootout.

The third star of the game was given to Lethbridge goaltender Harrison Meneghin while the second star was awarded to Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey, both for their strong performances on the night. The first star was received by the Hurricanes’ Tyson Zimmer who earned two points on the night with one goal and one assist.

After 21 games played, the shootout loss didn’t bring the Rebels down from their first place spot in the WHL’s Central Division, however, with a record of 16-3-0-2. The Hurricanes are in second place with a record of 11-8-0-1.

The Rebels will next play their first game back on home ice in roughly three weeks on Saturday, November 19, at the Peavey Mart Centrium against the Brandon Wheat Kings. You can also catch the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio starting at 7 p.m.
