Candlelight vigil for victims of impaired driving to be held in Red Deer Saturday

Nov 18, 2022 | 12:09 PM

Red Deer will be hosting the 30th annual candlelight vigil of Hope and Remembrance this Saturday for loved ones who’ve lost their lives as victims to an impaired driver.

Organized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Red Deer & District, the vigil will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church (4929 54 St) on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

While last year’s vigil was held virtually, this will be the first in-person in two years.

“We do it in November because we know that it is a very hard time for people around Christmas. Everybody is celebrating Christmas and they’re all missing a member of their family at these important gatherings,” said Joan McIntyre, President of the MADD Red Deer & District Board of Directors.

McIntyre confirmed well over 50 names have already been registered for the vigil. Others who wish to light a candle can still do so the day of.

“It just gives people an opportunity to come together so that they can remember their loved ones,” she said.

Following the vigil, she says a procession will be held to the downstairs kitchen area of the church for refreshments.
