The Red Deer Rebels made modern WHL history on Sunday (1978-current), earning their 13th straight victory to open a season and surpassing the old league record of 12 straight wins to start a season, previously set by the 1988-89 Swift Current Broncos.

The all-time WCHL/WHL record for wins to begin a season belongs to the 1967-68 Estevan Bruins squad that won their first 22 games out of the gate.

The record setting win came at the expense of the Oil Kings at Rogers Place in Edmonton where the Rebels beat the home team 7-2.

Red Deer now has a chance to equal its franchise record winning streak of 14 games, set during the 2001-02 season.

The first period, however, saw Edmonton strike first when Cole Miller beat Red Dee’rs Rhett Stoesser at 4:23 to put the Oil Kings up 1-0. It was Miller’s third goal of the season with Reid Larson assisting on the play.

The Rebels would respond at 10:57 though when Hunter Mayo scored his fifth of the season, beating Edmonton goaltender Alex Worthington to tie the game 1-1. Sylvan Lake native Talon Brigley was credited with the assist.

Just over two minutes later, the Oil Kings would regain the lead 2-1 when Carson Golder scored his second of the season, unassisted on the power play, following a tripping penalty to Red Deer’s Tayem Gislason.

Red Deer responded once again though as Kai Uchacz picked up his 11th of the season, scoring at 14:53 with some help from Kalan Lind and Jayden Grubbe, on the power play, following a too many men penalty to Edmonton which was served by Mason Finley.

After 20 minutes, the score was tied 2-2, with Red Deer outshooting Edmonton 13-8.

The Rebels would blow it open in the second period though, with Christoffer Sedoff getting the ball rolling at 2:16 when he scored his first of the season, putting the visitors up 3-2. Kai Uchacz assisted on the goal which would later prove to be the game winner.

Soon afterwards, Escalus Burlock scored his first goal of the season at 2:56 with the assist from Carson Birnie to put Red Deer up 4-2.

Craig Armstrong would then add to the Rebels lead when he scored his first of the season at 7:17 with the assist from Kai Uchacz to make it 5-2 Red Deer.

Less than a minute later, Edmonton’s Carter Kowalyk was called for holding, putting Red Deer on the power play, which the Rebels capitalized on as Hunter Mayo scored his second of the game and sixth of the season at the 9:06 mark to make it 6-2 Red Deer. Christoffer Sedoff and Jayden Grubbe assisted on the play.

The Rebels would add one more before the close of the period though, with Frantisek Formanek scoring his second of the season at 19:41 with assists from Kalan Lind and Jhett Larson to make it 7-2 Red Deer after 40 minutes.

The Rebels also outshot the Oil Kings 12-9 in the second for a two period total of 25-17 in favour of Red Deer.

The third period would see Edmonton change goaltenders, taking out Alex Worthington and replacing him with Kolby Hay.

Despite the Oil Kings having six power play opportunities in the third period, neither team scored, leaving the game in a 7-2 final.

Red Deer still managed to outshoot the Oil Kings 9-8 in the third period and 34-25 overall.

The Rebels went 2/5 on the power play while Edmonton went 1/12.

All three game stars also went to Red Deer, with Jayden Grubbe who earned two assists, getting the third star, while Hunter Mayo, who scored twice, was named the game’s second star. The first star of the game went to Kai Uchacz who earned three points with one goal and two assists on the night.

The Rebels next game will be their second of nine-in-a-row on the road when they take on the Broncos in Swift Current on Friday, November 4, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. MDT.
