City council approves $50,000 Canadian Finals Rodeo sponsorship

Red Deer city council approved a $50,000 sponsorship for the 2022 Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) at Tuesday’s meeting.

On October 11, council approved that the City of Red Deer will be the Co-Presenting Sponsor of the 48th CFR, scheduled to take place between November 2-6, 2022, at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

“We are proud to support the Canadian Finals Rodeo once again,” said Mayor Ken Johnston. “This event will continue to highlight Red Deer on the national stage and showcase our community as a premier destination for events of all sizes. This sponsorship is truly an investment in our local tourism and hospitality industries.”

In 2021, the CFR generated an estimate of $25 million in economic activity for central Alberta with over 25,000 attendees, according to Westerner Park’s Chief Executive Officer Mike Olesen and CFR Project Manager Chloe Pillar.

The funding for the sponsorship requests comes from The City’s Event Hosting & Outgoing Sponsorship funds. The fund was approved in 2020 to further the development and diversification of major events in Red Deer, in accordance with the Major Event Strategy and Destination Development Framework (MESDDF), say City officials.

Following the 2022 CFR sponsorship, the City confirms $91,100 remains in the fund for events and activations.

City council approved the Red Deer MESDDF in April 2021. The framework was designed, officials say, to strengthen the community’s readiness to attract and host new major events and position Red Deer as a premier tourism and event destination in Canada. As part of the framework’s implementation, The City says they have been working with Tourism Red Deer and various key stakeholders to develop the Tourism Red Deer Business Plan to strengthen three key pillars:

• Major Events
• Tourism Marketing
• Destination Development
