Mail-in and in-person ballots are being counted and results of who will replace Premier Jason Kenney are expected to be revealed around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The announcement was to begin at 5:30 p.m. Mid-afternoon the party said it was getting additional volunteers to count the more than 80,000 mail-in ballots received.

Seven candidates are vying for the leadership.

Former Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith is the perceived frontrunner. Brian Jean, another former leader of that party, and Travis Toews, finance minister in the Kenney government, have also polled well.

Former UCP cabinet ministers Rebecca Schulz, Rajan Sawhney and Leela Aheer are also running along with Independent Todd Loewen.

If Smith wins she will have to call a byelection as she is the only candidate running that doesnt have a seat in the legislature.
