100 Men of Red Deer hope to keep momentum at upcoming meeting

Sep 11, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The 100 Men of Red Deer fundraising club will be rallying the troops for their second meeting of the year on Monday.

The club meets a few times throughout the year to donate to a central Alberta charity. Beforehand, members nominate charities and three are randomly chosen to give a presentation of their organization at the meeting followed by a question and answer period. Through a vote, a charity is then chosen to receive the funds which are a minimum of $100 by each member present with the option for non-present members to donate afterwards.

Their next meeting will be once again at the Hideout Restaurant on September 12 at 7 p.m.

John Jenkins, Incoming President for 2023 and member since 2016, said their previous meeting on June 6 went fairly well as their first back in person.

With approximately 50 members in attendance, Jenkins said the Central Alberta Brian Injury Society (CABIS), the Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association, and the Ukrainian Displaced Persons Planning Committee for Central Alberta run by the St Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, were the chosen charities.

In a close vote, Jenkins says the CABIS charity was the winner. According to the Red Deer & District Community Foundation, which handles the donations for the club, $4,100 was donated to CABIS from their last meeting.

“We’re not a charity,” he said. “We’re a club of people who get together and listen to the charities and try to help them in any way we can.”

Although the financial donation is a guarantee, Jenkins says in the past, members have also volunteered their time helping to build a playground and have donated used laptops from a club member’s company.

With things looking closer to “back to normal”, Jenkins expects to see more members this upcoming meeting as he has heard positive feedback. The goal, he says, is to see a minimum of 100 members present at each meeting.

And while this year’s slogan is “Be a man who gives a damn”, Jenkins reassured that women are also welcome to join.

“It’s [about] coming and learning about charities you may or may not know about, helping our community and it’s a good opportunity for people to get together and chat with each other, do a little bit of networking,” he said.

Selected charities are kept undisclosed until the meeting to ensure fairness, he says. Door prizes are also available and the previous winning charity, CABIS, will give a speech on their plans for the news funds.

The Club’s last meeting of the year will be on December 5.
