Emergency crews rescue injured climber near Cline River

Jul 15, 2022 | 4:35 PM

A 35-year-old man is in stable condition after an incident in the west country on Thursday.

According to STARS Air Ambulance, a crew was dispatched at about 4:25 p.m. on July 15 to the Cline River area, 49 km southwest of Nordegg.

There, STARS rendezvoused with EMS to transport the man to Royal Alexandria Hospital.

It’s said the man sustained traumatic injuries resulting from a fall in a rocky area.

Erin Brownrigg, president with Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue, shed some additional light on the incident Friday.

“The man was climbing on some bluffs just in behind the Cavalcade group camp, which is located within the Kootenay Plains Provincial Recreation Area,” he says. “There was an incident, and we don’t know specifics, but the man fell onto a deck and broke his leg.”

Brownrigg elaborates only that the broken leg was an open fracture, meaning bone through skin.

“It’s different in every situation — maybe the individual forgot to clip in, or the belayer wasn’t paying attention, or he simply missed his footing,” says Brownrigg. “When you’re climbing, it’s between the climber and belayer; pay really close attention and have good communication between the two of you.”
