Sentencing set for Ponoka man charged in Wetaskiwin murder

Sentencing is due to take place this fall for a Ponoka man charged in a Wetaskiwin homicide two and a half years ago.

Ryan Jake Applegarth, 29, is scheduled for sentencing in Wetaskiwin Court of Queen’s Bench on Nov. 3, 2022.

On January 3, 2020, RCMP responded to a complaint of a deceased 34-year-old man at a residence in Wetaskiwin.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in relation to the incident.

Applegarth, meantime, is also scheduled for trial in relation to the death of a woman in Ponoka over a year-and-a-half ago.

He is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Queen’s Bench from May 1-5, 2023, in that matter.

It was on Nov. 5, 2020 when RCMP, along with EMS, responded to a 911 call for an injured female at a residential complex in Ponoka.

Chantelle Firingstoney, 26, a resident of Ponoka, was found deceased.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and following an autopsy, determined the cause of death to be homicide.
