Staff at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools recently wrapped their first annual division-wide social justice project.

The Reach for the Stars project raised funds for the Morning Star Program, a safe haven for women who are vulnerable of, at risk of, or are being exploited, provides those people with a safe place to access basic necessities such as hygiene products and laundry services.

Since launching May 9, it has raised over $14,800 for Morning Star, an initiative of Catholic Social Services (CSS).

“We are so grateful for the many contributions to our division Social Justice Project, Reach for the Stars, in support of the CSS Morning Star Program,” said Kathleen Finnigan, Superintendent at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. “Thank you for opening your hearts and coming together to support those who are most vulnerable and marginalized in our community.”

Activities for this social justice project included a video launch with a ‘Gear Down for a Good Cause’ theme week from May 9-13 with a $20 donation. For the May 6 professional development day, division staff could order a lunch from Café Millennium or Bo’s Bar and Stage with a portion of the proceeds going to this cause.

In addition, a 50/50 occurred from May 20-June 2 with the winning number drawn the morning of June 3. The winner took home just shy of $6,000.
