Seniors’ Week supports healthy activity and independence
It is Seniors’ Week June 6-12 and officials with Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it’s an opportunity to learn how seniors can stay safe, healthy and independent by promoting healthy activity to reduce falls.
AHS says falls are the leading cause of injury in seniors and can cause life-limiting effects that can lead to a decrease in independence. In 2020, falls among Alberta seniors ages 65+ resulted in over 34,000 visits to an emergency department or urgent care centre and over 11,000 hospitalizations.
While the risk of falls increases as people age, says AHS, falls are not considered a normal part of aging.
