Red Deer Public Schools foundation creates digital version of long-time body image teaching tool

A theatre production about body image and the impact that issue has on students will be presented in a new way for Red Deer students starting next week.

Under My Skin is a teaching tool utilized by The Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools since the foundation developed it in 2009. Annually — pre-pandemic — about 1,000 Grade 7 students in central Alberta would participate by viewing the play live during a week of shows at a local school.

The tool is also dispersed across the province for other school divisions to use.

The live action theatre production was recently produced into a video and will be unveiled on the big screen at Carnival Cinemas on May 25 to about 40 students and 45 other community members.

“We as family physicians find it very important that body image amongst our youth is emphasized — not only in how you look, but in how you portray your personality,” says Dr. Peter Bouch, a Family Physician in Red Deer and member of the Primary Care Network. “You’re beautiful from the inside out.”

Funded by the Primary Care Network, its distribution has been bolstered by Alberta Health Services, the foundation notes.

“COVID-19 challenged us in many ways and it was important to find a new way to share these valuable messages with our students,” says Kristine Plastow, Chair of the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools. “This is a powerful production that we know will resonate with students. We look forward to sharing it with not only them, but with our community as well.”
