It’s now down to a best-of three series between the Red Deer Rebels and Brandon Wheat Kings after a 3-1 victory for the Wheaties at Westoba Place in Brandon Wednesday night.

The Wheat Kings win tied the best-of seven WHL playoffs series 2-2, sending the series back to Red Deer on Friday.

The Rebels opened scoring in the first period at 7:44 when Jace Isley netted his second goal of the playoffs on Brandon goaltender Ethan Kruger. The goal was assisted by Kalan Lind and Jayden Grubbe, making it 1-0 Red Deer.

But at 13:01, the Wheat Kings’ Trae Johnson scored his first of the playoffs on Rebels netminder Chase Coward to tie it 1-1. Assists were made by Zakhar Polshakov and Marcus Kallionkieli.

The score remained tied after 20 minutes, with Red Deer outshooting Brandon 12-10.

In the second, an interference penalty for the Rebels’ Kalan Lind left the team shorthanded, resulting in Brandon’s Marcus Kallionkieli scoring his first of the playoffs on the power play at 18:24. Brett Hyland and Chad Nychuk claimed the assists, making it 2-1 for the home team.

After 40 minutes, it was the Wheat Kings with a 2-1 lead despite Red Deer outshooting Brandon 10-7 in the second period and 22-17 overall to that point.

The third period was a long one with just a few minor penalties and unseized power play opportunities.

Then at the 17:51 mark, Red Deer’s Christoffer Sedoff was sent to the box for interference, giving Brandon the man advantage.

The Rebels pulled goalie Chase Coward from the net at 19:16 in hopes of tying it up, but the Wheat Kings quickly capitalized when Marcus Kallionkieli scored his second goal of the game and second of the playoffs on the empty net to make it 3-1. Chad Nychuk assisted on the power play goal.

Rebels goaltender Chase Coward was then put back in the net only to come off another nine seconds later, with the game ending in a 3-1 final.

The Wheat Kings outshot the Rebels 11-5 in the third period and 28-27 overall.

Elsewhere, the Rebels went 0/3 on power plays while the Wheat Kings went 2/5 with the man advantage.

The third star of the game went to Rebels’ goaltender Chase Coward, while the second star went to Brandon’s goalie Ethan Kruger. The first star went to the Wheat Kings’ Marcus Kallionkieli for his two goals and one assist Wednesday evening.

The Rebels will next play the Wheat Kings Friday night back on home ice for Game 5 at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Face-off is 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
