This weekend was a game-changer for Hockey Alberta.

A total of 15 provincial hockey championships were held across the province, but the Under 13 (U13) Female A Provincial Championship hockey tournament in Picture Butte, Alberta stood out as the first of its kind in the province.

Tournament organizer Jane Groenenboom said what made this particular provincial championship tournament so unique was the all-female officiating team.

“This is the first time in provincial history that an all-female crew has been refereeing for the whole tournament, and so it is the first time ever for Hockey Alberta,” said Groenenboom.

She added that officiating is also a great way to encourage females to expand beyond playing the game.

“It’s very important for female hockey to also encourage these females to consider an alternative outside of hockey, and to go into the refereeing side.”

This year’s U13 Female A event hosted qualifying teams from Picture Butte, Grande Prairie, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Red Deer. It was the first time since 2018 that the Picture Butte Blades qualified for the provincials.

After an action-packed weekend, the Grande Prairie Knights won the U13 Female A Provincial Championship title, and the all-female referee crew skated into the history books for Hockey Alberta.
