Next priority: Blackfalds K-5 school

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools approves three-year capital plan

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools’ (RDCRS) Board of Trustees have approved their Three-Year Capital Plan until 2026.

Approved in late March, the three main priorities are:

  • New Blackfalds K-5 School
  • New Red Deer K-5 French Immersion School
  • New Red Deer K-5 School

The Board states a new K-5 School in Blackfalds is “required as soon as possible”. They expect a utilization rate of 122 per cent for St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in the upcoming school year. Two modulars are planned to be added for September, increasing capacity from 500 to 613 students. However, by 2026, the student population is expected to grow to 780 students. The new K-5 school is said to be needed by September 2025.

Meantime, the new 500 student K-5 French Immersion School in Red Deer is sought to be completed by September 2027. Currently, École Camille J. Lerouge School runs the French Immersion program from K-9, however, RDCRS says they have seen a large increase in lower grade enrollments, putting a strain on the current school’s capacity. The new school would be an accompaniment to the ongoing K-9 French Immersion program at École Camille J. Lerouge School.

Elsewhere, the Board says the new 500 student capacity K-5 school in Red Deer is needed by September 2029 to alleviate the continued growth in the city. According to officials, current utilization for the K-5 Father Henri Voisin School sits at 89 per cent and St. Joseph High School at 72 per cent with the Board expecting those numbers to increase.

In progress is the new Grades 6-9 middle school, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, in Red Deer. Already approved with full funding, the Board says the middle school will relieve the capacity pressure on the other middle schools in Red Deer and Blackfalds, which are all over 100 per cent utilization rate. Officials say stakeholder engagement sessions in March produced 22 pieces of feedback regarding boundary development for the new middle school and will be presented in a report to the Board of Trustees at their next meeting. The school is scheduled to open in September 2023.
