Ponoka’s Curbside Recycling Collection Program now includes #1-7 plastics
The Town of Ponoka’s curbside recycling collection program has expanded and citizens can now place all plastics labelled with the numbers 1-7 at the curb for recycling.
For the past few years, Town officials acknowledge Ponoka citizens have only been able to place plastics labelled with numbers 1 and 2 at the curb for recycling. That was due to market restrictions that made it too costly for many companies to access recycling markets for mixed plastics because those plastics had to be sorted by number and cleaned.
However, the Town’s waste management contractor, E360S, has recently started transporting its recyclable plastics to a company in Edmonton that uses an automated sorting system to cost effectively sort large volumes of mixed plastics. This automated sorting of large volumes is said to make it feasible for the company to now access recycling markets for plastics #1-7.
“Being able to place all plastics with numbers 1-7 at the curb for recycling again means that our community can start diverting more waste from the landfill. That’s great news,” said Sandra Lund, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Ponoka.
