Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics recap

In the final weekend of competition this season, there were many memorable performances by Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics teams.

The RDP Kings and Queens Volleyball squads won bronze at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Volleyball National Championships. The RDP Queens Hockey team earned ACAC gold on home ice. The Polytechnic’s Kings Indoor Track team solidified gold and the Queens picked up silver at the ACAC Championships in Edmonton.

Here is a summary of what happened this week:

Queens Volleyball | CCAA Championship | March 25-27 | Charlottetown, PEI | Holland College

In a CCAA National Championship Quarter-final, the RDP Queens swept the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics (25-19, 25-19 and 25-16). Queens Player of the Game Sydney Rix contributed 10 kills, one block, one dig and an ace. Outside hitter Tess Pearman had a team high 11 kills.

RDP outside hitter Anna Carlson was named an All-Canadian.

On Saturday, the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners downed the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in three sets (25-23, 25-19 and 26-24) in a CCAA Championship Semi-final. Entering the weekend, the Mariners had won the past three national championships.

Queens Player of the Game Pearman accumulated a team high 15 kills. Libero Kaylee Domoney had a great game, contributing 17 digs and two assists.

In a national bronze semi-final, the RDP Queens swept Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface (25-13, 25-17 and 25-9).

Domoney was named the Queens Player of the Game.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens defeated the Lynx d’Eduouard-Montpetit in five sets (16-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-12), earning national bronze.

Carlson was named the Queens Player of the Game, contributing 18 kills, seven digs, five blocks and two of the team’s nine aces.

Pearman was selected to the CCAA Women’s Volleyball First All-Tournament team. Rix and Domoney earned spots on the CCAA Second All-Tournament team.

Kings Volleyball | CCAA Championship | March 25-27 | Québec, QC | Cégep Limoilou

The host Limoilou Titans edged the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings in five sets (19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 10-15) in a CCAA National Championship Semi-final on Friday. RDP outside hitter Nicholas Possingham had a match high 17 kills. Kings Player of the Game Cody Boulding contributed 10 kills, one block and two of the team’s nine aces.

RDP setter Maddux Greves (48 assists) was named an All-Canadian.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings swept the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers (25-17, 25-11 and 25-17) in a bronze quarter-final.

Red Deer’s Brett Lower was selected the Kings Player of the Game.

On Sunday, the RDP Kings swept the St. Thomas Tommies (25-20, 25-18 and 25-18) in a bronze semi-final.

Kings Player of the Game Greves contributed 29 assists.

The Kings defeated the Redeemer Royals in four sets (25-21, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-20) to earn national bronze.

Greves and Boulding earned spots on the CCAA First All-Tournament team. Lower received the honour as a CCAA Second All-Tournament team selection.

Possingham was selected the Kings Player of the Game, accumulating 12 kills.

Queens Hockey | ACAC Championship | Friday, March 25 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens completed a three game sweep over the Olds College Broncos with a 1-0 victory in the ACAC Championship, earning gold.

North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game Dylan Norrie scored the lone goal for the Polytechnic.

“I used their d-man in front of me and whipped it top corner on her right side,” said Norrie, a Bachelor of Education Secondary student. “I just had a feeling that I was going to score. We needed it.”

RDP Queens goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore earned a 14 save shutout.

Indoor Track | ACAC Championships | March 26-27 | U of A Pavilion

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Indoor Track team earned gold at the ACAC Championships. The Queens picked up silver.

There were also many individual and relay medals.
