Red Deer RCMP respond to altercation at local high school

When the youth walked away from the officer, heading towards a different part of the school, RCMP say the officer caught up with the student and affected an arrest without injury in front of other students. The youth was then taken to an awaiting police vehicle, and provided transport to their guardian.

RCMP do not believe there was a safety risk during the incident, but acknowledge the school did enter into a “shelter in place” for a short period of time as a precaution.

School officials say teaching and learning continued as normal following the incident.

Police say the individual will not be charged and no further information about the incident is anticipated from either police or the school.

“We want to assure students and parents that student safety is our top priority and we thank staff and students for their quick and cooperative response,” noted Principal Chris Good, in a letter to parents on Thursday.

School officials point out, however, that during the situation, some students may have recorded video of the incident. Those students are reminded and cautioned that given the incident involves a youth, it is a criminal offense to post any of those materials on social media or share the content with others.
