Mayor Johnston gives statement on conflict in Ukraine
City of Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston released a statement Friday on the conflict currently taking place in Ukraine:
“The news this week of the invasion and conflict in Ukraine has no doubt struck all Red Deerians to the core. Our collective hearts are with the Ukrainian people. There are no right words to say, but we see you and we send so much love and prayers to the people fearing and fighting for their lives.
Alberta and Red Deer is home to many people with connections to the eastern European country. Ukrainians have helped build the fabric of Alberta over the past century. The people of Ukraine are fighting in defense of Canadian values and, as Red Deerians, we must continue to support them to the best of our abilities.
I encourage everyone to reach out to people of Ukraine decent that you know within our community. Many fear for the safety of friends and family back home. They are struggling, they are watching with uncertainty the news at every waking moment. Send them your support, bring them meals, and ask them what we can do to help.
