Wind Speeds of 89 kms/hr

Strong winds blow through Red Deer area Monday

Feb 1, 2022 | 10:50 AM

Central Alberta was one of many areas across the province that saw very strong winds blow through on Monday.

According to meteorologists with Environment Canada, peak wind gusts unofficially reached speeds of 89 kms/hr at Red Deer Regional Airport and 106 kms/hr in Three Hills.

Officials say a low pressure system formed over western Alberta on Sunday and moved southeast into Saskatchewan early Monday.

This system led to blizzard conditions over eastern parts of the province and caused reduced visibility and blowing snow over much of the central and southern parts of the province, including in the Calgary-Edmonton corridor. Heavy snow fell in some areas as well.

Several collisions were caused by the poor visibility mixed with strong winds and slippery roads, including a major pileup on Trans-Canada Highway west of Suffield. Many travel advisories had been issued by RCMP due to weather conditions.

Damages due to wind have also been reported, including one home in transport that flipped from a flatbed truck near Hanna.

Cold Lake Airport reported a total of 21 centimetres during the event. Over southwestern Alberta, heavy snow fell as well. Near Barrier Lake, a report of nearly 20 centimetres was received.
