Attendance at the 2022 IIHF World Juniors will unfortunately be limited to 50 per cent of capacity.

The Government of Alberta announced temporary targeted measures Tuesday afternoon which limit venues with capacity of 1,000 or more to 50 per cent for the foreseeable future.

This means all of the pre-tournament, preliminary round and playoff World Juniors games at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre and Peavey Mart Centrium are impacted.

Those games were set to begin with full capacity on Dec. 23 after the schedule, which was supposed to commence Dec. 19, was cut short.

“Following the announcement that the Province of Alberta will be implementing capacity limits for indoor sporting events, the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will be reducing capacity to 50 per cent for all games, effective immediately,” says a statement from Hockey Canada, attributed to both Scott Smith, president & COO, and Tom Renney, CEO.

“The event ticketing team is currently addressing the implementation of this change and will be in contact with all ticket holders by the end of the day on Thursday, Dec. 23. No further ticket information is available at this time, but we thank our ticket holders for their patience and request that they please wait to receive the detailed communication before inquiring about next steps.”

The statement also says Hockey Canada fully supports the direction taken by the Government of Alberta.

“We will continue to do our part to maintain the health and safety of all World Juniors participants and the community at large.”
