Active COVID caseload up, ICU admissions down in Alberta

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

Over the past three days, Alberta Health confirmed a combined 863 new cases, with 373 on Friday, 288 on Saturday, and 202 on Sunday.

There are now 4,182 active cases, up 123 from Friday. Of those, 3,463 are variants of concern.

A total of 30 Omicron cases have been confirmed, up seven from Friday — with 21 in Calgary Zone, three in Edmonton Zone, four in North Zone, and two in Central Zone.

An average of 6,938 tests were conducted each day over the past three days. The seven-day positivity rate is currently 3.85 per cent, down from 3.92 per cent a week ago.

Provincially, 357 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, down 10. Today’s new total includes 68 patients in ICU, down three.

Since Friday’s update, there has sadly been three new deaths added to the provincial COVID-19 death toll, which stands at 3,275.

R values

New R value numbers were released this week.

An R value above 1.0 means transmission rate is increasing, while a value of 1.0 means an infected person will infect one other person. Below 1.0 means transmission rate is decreasing.

For the period of Nov. 15-28: province-wide, the R value was 0.88. In Edmonton Zone, it was 0.95, in Calgary Zone, the value was 0.90, and the rest of Alberta sat at 0.80.

For the period of Nov. 1-14: province-wide, the R value was 0.92. In Edmonton Zone, it was 0.92, in Calgary Zone, the value was 1.00, and the rest of Alberta sat at 0.87.

For the period of Oct. 25-31, province-wide, the R value was 0.87. In Edmonton Zone, it was 0.90, the value for Calgary Zone was 0.91, and the rest of Alberta sat at 0.84.

For the period of Oct. 11-17, province-wide, the R value was 0.85. In Edmonton Zone, it was also 0.85, Calgary Zone’s was 0.80, and the rest of Alberta was 0.84.

For the period of Sept. 27 to Oct. 3, Alberta’s average R value was 0.92. In Edmonton Zone, the rate was 0.86, Calgary Zone was 0.93, and the rest of Alberta was 0.94.

For the period of Sept. 13-19, Alberta’s value was 1.04, Edmonton was at 0.97, Calgary at 0.94, and the rest of Alberta at 1.15.

For the period of Aug. 16-22, Alberta’s value was 1.19, Edmonton was 1.32, Calgary was 1.05, and the rest of the province was at 1.22.

R value numbers are updated by Alberta Health every two weeks.

CENTRAL ZONE

Over the weekend, Red Deer added 18 cases, 16 recoveries and zero fatalities.

That leaves Red Deer with 93 active cases, up (net) two from Friday.

Red Deer has now recorded 9,490 total cases, 9,313 recoveries and 84 deaths, with zero fatalities reported this weekend.

Red Deer’s active case rate is currently 87.4 per 100,000 people, compared to 90.7 for City of Calgary and 64.4 for City of Edmonton.

The entire Central Zone has 525 active cases as of Monday, up five from Friday. There are 66 hospitalizations, down three, and eight people are receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one.

The zone has had 407 deaths linked to the virus, with two reported over the weekend — a male in his 70s who passed Dec. 9, and a male in his 80s who passed Dec. 11.

VACCINATIONS

In Alberta, 7,147,330 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have now been administered as of the end of Dec. 12. That’s up 52,889 over the weekend.

Of the 5+ population, 83.0 per cent has received at least one dose (78.0% total population), while 76.8 per cent of the 5+ population is now fully vaccinated (72.2% total population).

514,749 Albertans have received a third dose, up 32,215.

*Local numbers below now reflect percentages based on the number of people in Red Deer who are 5+, which recently changed from 12+, therefore numbers may be lower than they had been; the Government of Alberta says 100,446 people in Red Deer are eligible for vaccination, with a population of 106,420.)

In Red Deer, 76,146 (75.8% eligible/71.6% total population) people have received at least one dose, up 257. The total includes 1,535 kids aged 5-11.

Meanwhile, 71,487 (71.2% eligible/67.2% total population) residents are fully vaccinated, up 171.
