Rebels overcome 3-0 deficit to beat Hitmen in overtime

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped up their weekend with a 3-3 ties against the Calgary Hitmen at the Peavey Mart Centrium Sunday night.

The tie followed a 4-0 loss to Moose Jaw Friday evening at the Centrium.

Calgary opened the scoring Sunday at 18:51 of the first period when Sean Tschigerl scored his 15th goal of the season. It came on the power play after a boarding penalty to Red Deer’s Talon Brigley and was assisted by Riley Fiddler-Schultz and Jackson van de Leest.

The period ended 1-0 Calgary with shots favouring Red Deer 13-9 after 20 minutes of play.

The Hitmen added to their lead early in the second period when Cael Zimmerman scored his seventh of the season at 1:14 to make it 2-0. He was assisted by Adam Kydd and Tyson Galloway on the play.

The Hitmen struck again at the 6:20 mark when Anton Yatsyshin scored his second goal of the season and was assisted by Bake Allan and Billal Noori to make it 3-0 Calgary.

The Rebels responded soon afterwards though when Jhett Larson scored his sixth of the season at 8:53 to make it 3-1. Arshdeep Bains and Ben King were credited with assists on the play.

Red Deer cut into Calgary’s lead further when Arshdeep Bains scored his 10th goal of the season. It came on the power play following a holding penalty to the Hitmen’s Jackson van de Leest. Blake Stevenson and Rebels goalie Connor Ungar picking up assists on the play.

It was 3-2 Calgary after 40 minutes with the Hitmen outshooting Red Deer 11-6 in the second period for a two period total of 20-19 in favour of Calgary.

The Rebels tied things up in the third period, however, when Jace Isley scored his third of the season, unassisted, at 11:13, eventually sending the game to overtime.

Red Deer dominated the shot clock in the third period as well, outshooting Calgary 12-2 in the final frame.

In extra time, Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz sealed the win for the Rebels when he scored his eight goal of the season at the 4:00 mark, assisted by Arshdeep Bains, to make it a 4-3 overtime final.

Both teams registered two shots on net each in extra time for a game total of 33-24 in favour of Red Deer.

Rebels head coach Steve Konowalchuk admits it was a fun game to watch.

“Maybe not for the first five minutes of the second period, but we came out and played the way we needed to in the first period and was a little bit surprised we were in the situation that we were w,hen we were down 3-0. But our guys ramped it up and they played hard and played with determination and they didn’t want to be denied. I’m definitely proud of our group,” shared Konowalchuk.

Sunday’s third star of the game went to the Rebels Jhett Larson, while Calgary’s Sean Tschigerl was named the game’s second star. First star honours went to Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains.

With the win, the Rebels record improves to 16-9-1 on the season, good for second place in the WHL’s Central Division, while the Calgary Hitmen drop to 10-9-2 and remain in third place in the Central Division.

Red Deer’s next game is Friday, Dec. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Lethbridge to face the 9-11-1 Hurricanes who sit in fifth place in the WHL’s Central Division.
