Red Deer Justice Film Festival partners virtually with Calgary

The Red Deer Justice Film Festival is once again going virtual this year, from Nov. 18 – 21, in partnership with the Calgary Justice Film Festival.

The festival presents new documentaries each day, chosen from a submission pool of over 1,000 filmmakers around the world, aimed to create awareness about issues of justice in communities.

This year, three of the seven films presented relate to the province of Alberta.

On Nov. 19, Variety by Ramin Eshragi-Yazdi, takes a look at the societal impacts of having a vast variety of consumer products at one’s disposal. Eshragi-Yazdi is an award-winning filmmaker and performer from Calgary and Montreal with 17 years of experience in the industry, including TV commercials, music videos and experimental art installation.

Also on Nov. 19, THE LINE by Anthony Goertz, takes viewers behind the scenes of what really happens when trash is thrown. The documentary, taking place at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, is actually Goertz’s thesis for completing his MA in Social Justice at the University of Alberta. The past few years have been spent working in film and TV in Vancouver.

On Nov. 21, Kimmapiiyipitssini – The Meaning of Empathy, by Elle-Máijá Tailfeather, depicts how the opioid crisis affected the filmmaker’s hometown and community of Kainai Nation in Southern Alberta.

The Calgary Justice Film Festival, previously branded as the Marda Loop Film Festival, began in 2006, and was brought to Red Deer in 2008. Organized for two years by a Calgary non-profit organization called CAUSE Canada, it was then run by a group of women called The Heart of Women (HOW).
