Rebels blanked by Hitmen, teams split home-and-home

Oct 16, 2021 | 4:14 PM

The Red Deer Rebels’ offense dried up Saturday against Calgary after potting eight goals the night previous against the same team.

Red Deer, now 3-3-1-0, lost 2-0 to the Hitmen, now 2-3-0-0 in what was the second of eight matchups between the teams this season. The loss was on home ice after winning 8-1 on the road Friday.

In the rematch, Calgary’s Keagan Slaney (1st) would score in the dying minutes of the first, at 17:37, to give the visitors the lead.

Along the way, Red Deer gave Calgary seven powerplays, one of which the Hitmen scored on at 6:29 of the third.

Zac Funk (1st) scored to give Calgary a 2-0 lead, and that was all she wrote.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:

*Keagan Slaney (CGY) – 1G, 1A

**Chase Coward (RD) – 31 saves on 33 shots

***Jackson van de Leest (CGY) – 4 shots

In the loss, Rebels goaltender Chase Coward moved to 2-3-0-0 on the season. Starting for the second straight night, Brayden Peters stopped all 25 shots he faced to get the shutout for Calgary, meantime improving to 2-3-1-0. That was also a rebound game for Peters who allowed seven goals on Friday, but couldn’t be beat on this day.

Red Deer went 0/5 on the powerplay, while Calgary went 1/7. Calgary outshot Red Deer 33-25.

The Rebels play next on Sunday (Oct. 17) on the road in Edmonton. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 3:50.
