TODAY: Coats 4 Kids charity checkstop on until 4 p.m.

Oct 2, 2021 | 10:09 AM

The annual Coats 4 Kids charity checkstop is happening today (Oct. 2) from 9-4.

This is the event’s 60th year in Red Deer, with various organizations taking on the Coats 4 Kids mantle over time.

Volunteers with the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre (CACPC) will be on on the median along Taylor Drive between 32 Street and 43 Street.

TerryLee Ropchan, CACPC executive director, emphasizes the event’s importance.

“There are hard times out there and a lot of people are in need. We take coats and any type of winter wear for children and adults,” says Ropchan. “Victory Church has been looking after this program for several years, and they have arrangements with cleaners around town to have all the items cleaned. We have cold winters and so it’s important we understand that this meets a big community need.”

It’s recommended that items be either new or gently used.

Partnering cleaners are Classic Cleaners, The Coverall Shop, Mustang Laundry, Sterling Cleaners and Village Dry Cleaners.

If you can’t donate today, drop off at any of the above named locations until Oct. 23.

Those in need of items can stop by Victory Church (98 Oberlin Avenue) from 1-4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting Oct. 13.

Cash donations can also be given, either to the Coats 4 Kids cause, or for the CACPC’s programming.
