Nine years in the making, Springbrook skatepark is hugely popular

The youth of Springbrook rejoiced this summer as construction was completed on the Springbrook Skatepark – a project almost a decade in the making.

The official grand opening was held Aug. 21, to coincide with the community’s 25^th anniversary.

The only things missing now are some of the final touches. Fundraising is still needed for things like lighting, benches, garbage cans, and signage, which still need to be installed.

Adrian Pidhirney is the president of the Springbrook Community Skatepark Committee, the group which spearheaded the initiative.

He says there hasn’t been a slow day there since it opened, with groups coming from far and wide.

“There’s a ton of local kids and we’ve had people visit from all over the province and a couple different provinces too. More than one group from Regina, lots from Calgary and Edmonton, and all around central Alberta.”

Pidhirney says they worked with New Line Skateparks Inc. out of Langley, BC, and it couldn’t have gone smother, completing construction ahead of schedule and on budget.

He says they’ve had nothing but positive feedback on the project since day one.

“It wasn’t a short process. Planning, fundraising and all that kind of stuff for nearly nine years, and the community has been behind us the entire time. We’re still accepting bottle donations and we’ll be doing some fundraising in the community to help finish up the park.”

The cost of the project to date is around $635,000, including tax. That breaks down to roughly $55,000 for its design and $550,000 for construction.

The 8,000 sq. ft. park also received a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant from the provincial government for $125,000. Red Deer County also chipped in around $400,000 while the rest was paid for through community fundraisers.
