Canadian Finals Rodeo returns to Red Deer Nov. 3-7

Canadian Finals Rodeo makes its grand return to Red Deer Nov. 3-7.

That’s the hope of organizers, anyway, who are crossing their fingers that the event’s 47th edition can avoid being derailed by COVID-19 a second time.

CFR is the national championship rodeo event and attracts the best contestants and stock the country has to offer.

Red Deer was chosen as the new home for CFR in 2018, with a committment of 10 years. Last year’s cancellation was announced in June, months in advance.

“This is our opportunity to come together again as a rodeo community to celebrate the best in our sport,” says Jeff Robson, General Manager, CPRA. “The last couple of years were a challenge, but in true cowboy fashion, we have rebounded, and look forward to an amazing CFR47.”

Mike Olesen, Westerner Park CEO, is also eager to see CFR rebound.

“Our staff, volunteers, sponsors, community partners, and supporters are all working together to put on this world-class event,” he says. “In addition to the main rodeo performances, people can also get in the spirit through the cabaret, concerts, trade show, plus other onsite and community events.”

CFR includes all major pro rodeo events, including Bareback, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc, Tie-Down Roping, Ladies Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, Junior Steer Riding, Novice Saddle and Bareback Riding.

For the first time ever, fans will also enjoy Breakaway Roping.

More than 120 athletes are expected to compete in what is the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s season finale.

In 2019, more than 71,000 people attended, with the six-day event causing an economic spinoff of more than $30 million.
