A Red Deer RCMP officer charged with assault will go to trial next spring.

Kent McDiarmid appeared in Red Deer provincial court last month, accused of assault in an incident which occurred March 2, 2020.

It’s said that McDiarmid, a 15-year member and corporal, was involved in an altercation in the Red Deer detachment’s cells area which resulted in him allegedly striking an adult male who’d been arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

That male was taken to hospital as a precaution and later remanded for a parole violation.

McDiarmid, 39, had been suspended with pay from July 2020 until April 2021, which is when he was reinstated following the RCMP’s internal conduct review process.

His trial is set for April 13, 2022.

Meantime, the man accused of stabbing a loss prevention officer also has a trial date.

Raine William Gray, 25, stands accused in the May 22, 2021 incident whick took place at Red Deer’s south Walmart.

rdnewsNOW learned immediately following the incident that the officer had been stabbed three times after confronting a man he’d believed had been shoplifting.

He didn’t realize he’d been stabbed until after having chased the suspect for a short distance.

The officer was taken to hospital and recovered. At the time, it was said he’d been stabbed with a kitchen knife of unknown size.

Gray was located and arrested about a week later, and then denied bail at a July 12 court appearance.

His trial is scheduled for Dec. 22, 2021.
