Lacombe council approves Kew Gardens playground replacement

Kids in the city of Lacombe will soon have a new playground to play on at Kew Gardens.

On Monday, city council awarded the contract to replace the playground at Kew Gardens to Canadian Recreation Solution in the amount of $149,750.00 plus GST.

The contract was awarded based on a recommendation from the Lacombe and District Recreation, Parks, and Culture Board.

“The playground renewal program helps us maintain the City’s service level in outdoor facilities and amenities,” said Mayor Grant Creasey, in a press release. “By bringing in the latest playground equipment, we can help our youngest citizens not only have fun – but also grow and prosper in our community.”

The City issued a Request for Proposal on March 16, 2021, seeking playground supply and install at Kew Gardens, including new groundcover, plus demolition of the old equipment. The RFP closing date was April 22, 2021.

“City staff assessed the nine proposals received against the mandatory requirements, which did not disqualify any proposals,” added Director of Community Services, Deborah Juch. “They were then evaluated against the discretionary criteria which included innovation, design, layout, maintenance, warranty, budget, and schedule.”

In addition to the standard elements, the Canadian Recreation Solution playground design includes a custom Little Tikes Commercial Nu Edge 3 Story Tower, which will be a first for the city. As well, engineered wood fibre as groundcover adds a more accessible element to its design, according to City officials.

The Lacombe and District Recreation, Parks, and Culture Board unanimously recommended the Kew Gardens Option 1 with the natural green and brown colours to Council.

The City prepares for playground lifecycle replacement by budgeting to replace the oldest playgrounds in the city.

Officials say proposed playground designs and replacement equipment should be innovative and unique if possible, while fostering the development of children’s motor, sensory, and social skills.
